C4D Focus/Experience

My experience is in applied multimedia and participatory ethnography and community-based qualitative social science. I focus in particular on working with computer scientists, NGOs, and community members (including community-based healthcare workers, educators, local entrepreneurs) to create mobile information sharing systems (e.g. mhealth and meducation initiatives; digital repositories; mobile phone applications) in contexts with minimal infrastructure (including no electricity, internet, or smartphones). I have worked with diverse communities around the globe with an emphasis on Indigenous and disenfranchised populations. I have experience in designing and deploying novel methodologies including multimedia digital methods (e.g. digital storytelling, soundscapes, film-making and portraiture), visual and sensory methods, and in design ethnography. As well as in designing and conducting participatory and action research approaches (e.g. use of Ethnographic Action Research methodology, community participatory action research), and other research designs with an emphasis on social justice, capacity building, participatory content creation, community-based program monitoring and evaluation. Areas of focus include: Youth and community empowerment and participatory engagement / youth employment / homelessness / poverty reduction / education including program development, pedagogic innovations, policy, and training; and meducation intiatives / public health including healthcare interventions, cross-cultural adaptations and competence, health communications and education, and health disparities; and mhealth initiatives / rural and urban development including using mobile technologies
