C4D Focus/Experience
From playing a leading role in the planning and development of the first ever United Nations Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity to reporting on politics and social matters in the United States for the French international broadcaster, my career has focused on promoting the human right to Freedom of Expression. For nearly 15 years and in more than a half-dozen countries my motivation has been based on the simple premise that people and communities are empowered when they are able to seek, receive and impart information. I am now based in Washington DC as the U.S. correspondent for the Spanish service of Radio France Internationale and as a consultant on media development and communications, including proposal writing, evaluation reports, strategies and training. I am open to new challenges. I have worked for media, NGOs and international organizations, such as UNESCO, on issues related to media development and journalism training, communication for development, gender and media, community media, journalism education, and culture and development. My work has taken me to Bosnia & Herzegovina, Mexico and France, among others. I work in Spanish, French and English. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism Education. I also have a Masters degree in International Information and Developing Countries and a second Masters in Communication and Social Change and Development, all from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). I am now writing my PhD thesis on the role of the UN on the Safety of Journalists. I see the world through a Human Rights lens, convinced that independent and participatory media are crucial for the exercise of freedom of expression and therefore to democratic societies.
