C4D Focus/Experience

Director Education and Society, British Council Indonesia since January 2014. Relevant current activity includes science journalism/communication supporting science journalists, researchers e.g. communicating and contextualising their research to a wider audience, role of researchers and media in evidence based policy, data driven journalism, promoting uptake of sciences in schools and citizen science journalism. Previously I worked with the Jakarta-based Public Virtue Institute, the Institute for Digital Democracy and Civic Activism. Before that I worked as assistant station manager for a new online community radio station in N London, Kilburn to Kensal Radio which I helped to set up with RadioActive and CanCan Productions. I have worked with community organisations and NGOs in Indonesia and the UK over a period spanning 20 years. Some examples of relevant activities over the years include working as facilitator on participatory video with the Jatiwangi Art Factory (JAF), a community organisation in West Java (Nov-Dec 2011); as a producer on the radio drama series ‘Menteng Pangkalan’ for Common Ground Indonesia (2004-5) and as a research associate with the University of Leiden researching local radio, language and identity in Indonesia (96-98). My main areas of interest include: • Critical media literacy • New media, participation and innovation incl citizen journalism • Community radio and radio drama • Participatory video
